Clean creeks, lagoons and the ocean

The city’s Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program is part of a nationwide effort to protect creeks, lagoons and the ocean  from pollution.  The city’s program focuses on keeping pollutants or pollution out of the storm drain system, which transports  untreated runoff, directly into nearby water bodies.  City activities include:

  • Working with public and private development projects to incorporate Low Impact Development design principles and treatment control best management practices into developments, both of which help prevent pollutant runoff into the storm drain system.
  • Managing and inspecting construction sites, special events, municipal facilities, and commercial and industrial businesses to prevent discharges of pollutants into the storm drain system.
  • Inspecting, cleaning and maintaining the City’s storm drain system.
  • Providing information to those that live, work, and play in Carlsbad about how they can help protect local water bodies.
  • Helping businesses and residents keep fats, oils and grease out of the sewer system, which can cause sewer back ups and spills.
  • Educating city staff about how they can help practice pollution prevention in their daily activities to protect local water bodies
