Hazardous waste is any gas, liquid, or solid used in the home labeled with the words caution, warning, danger, poison, toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive and poses a health threat to people, animals, and the environment due to the chemical nature. Limits per drop-off or pick-up are 15 gallons or 125 pounds, and require proof of residency (driver's license, etc.). HHW sites and pick-up services do not accept explosives, radioactive, biomedical or business wastes.
Kitchen
Household cleaners, floor care products, drain openers and cleaners, bleach, bug sprays, pest traps, ammonia-based products, etc.
Bathroom
Bathroom cleaners, disinfectants, hair sprays and dyes, hair removers, isopropyl alcohol, mercury thermometers, nail polish, nail polish removers, etc.
Living and dining rooms
Carpet cleaners, floor cleaners, dust and furniture polish, etc.
Office
E-waste containing lead, mercury, cadmium and other materials that harm people and their environment including computer monitors, televisions, video cameras with cathode ray tube or picture tube, cell phones, batteries, printers, fax machines, some toys, etc.
Garage
Used motor oil and filters, batteries, antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, transmission fluid, glue, adhesives, paint, varnish and stains, paint remover and thinner, turpentine, car cleaners, etc.
Yard
Chlorine and other pool chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, weed killers, etc.
Each year, the city sponsors a single day, drop off Hazardous Household Waste event. The 2014 event will be held on a Saturday in April. This event is by appointment only and exclusively for Carlsbad residents. Identification will be required (drives license, utility bill, etc.).
