Street Maintenance

The Street Maintenance Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of more than 830 lane miles of roadway, over 8,000 street lights, 165+ signalized intersections and all sidewalks in the public right-of-way. Additionally, Streets Department crews remove graffiti from the public right-of-way and maintain the Carlsbad Seawall and the downtown area hardscape.

Streets Department staff provides traffic control during emergencies and special events, and is often called upon to respond to emergencies on the city’s right-of-way.

Traffic signalsStreet signals and signs.

Traffic signals are used to assign the right-of-way to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians at busy intersections.  There are many factors that contribute to how traffic signals operate  including vehicle and pedestrian volumes, emergency vehicle response, impacts due to temporary construction and signal coordination.

Street lights

Street lights illuminate the public right-of-ways to help ensure safe travel for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic after dark. Each light is equipped with a photoelectric cell that senses the amount of daylight. It controls the power to the light and, therefore, turns the light on at dusk and off at dawn. Commonly reported complaints are burnouts, cycling on and off, and constant burns.

To report a malfunctioning street light, please call 760-434-2980.  Be prepared to provide an exact location of the light (i.e. “in front of 1635 Faraday Ave.” or “on the east side of El Camino Real, third light north of Chestnut Ave.”). Contact information, including a daytime phone number, is also important so that the electrician can call if he has questions. We are experiencing longer repair times due to the installation of induction street lights throughout the City. Street light repairs will take 3 to 4 weeks.

To find the street sweeping schedule for a specific address, click on first letter of street named desired. Schedule of street sweeping follows street name.
