RECYCLE YOUR USED OIL AND FILTERS

Oil is a hazardous waste. It is also a valuable resource. Recycling used oil and the oil left in used oil filters is an efficient solution to these conflicting truths.

Oil Does Not Wear Out

The same process that refines 70 gallons of crude oil into one gallon of virgin lubricating oil can re-refine 1.6 gallons of your used oil into a gallon of API certified lubricating oil--using one-third the energy.

What Carlsbad Residents Can Do

There are four things a citizen needs to do to in order to be the ideal recycler of used oil:

  • Handle used oil properly to avoid degradation to the environment (do not spill it or dump it onto land or water)
  • Avoid contaminating used oil with other liquids such as water, antifreeze, gasoline or parts cleaner (or else it will be removed from the recycling chain) Do not store your oil in old household chemical or detergent containers.
  • Place your oil into the recycling chain (as opposed to the hazardous waste dump). Take your oil to a Certified Collection Center.
  • Help in the demand for re-refined oil by purchasing or asking for re-refined oil when you service your car or equipment.

Certified Collection Centers

These are businesses that will accept uncontaminated oil in appropriate containers from citizens and put that used oil into the recycling chain. They will pay you a recycling fee of four cents per quart upon request. Call for Store hours.
