Environmental Sustainability Commission

On Tuesday, the Carlsbad City Council finalized plans to replace the Beach Preservation Commission with the new Environmental Sustainability Commission, which will take effect later this summer.

The new commission will take on a broader role investigating, researching and making recommendations to the City Council on topics related to:

  • Natural resources and open space
  • Beach nourishment and shoreline preservation
  • Climate adaptation and environmental sustainability

Beach-related topics, previously overseen by the Beach Preservation Commission, will continue to be part of the commission’s responsibilities, now considered alongside a wider range of environmental priorities.

This transition aligns with the City Council’s 5-Year Strategic Plan, which includes a goal to protect Carlsbad’s natural environment.

The City Council first approved the transition in April and, on Tuesday, adopted an ordinance updating the municipal code to formally establish the new commission. The ordinance takes effect July 24.

What to expect

  • The commission’s first meeting is scheduled for Aug. 7.
  • Meetings will be open to the public, and agendas will be available on the city’s website.
  • Commission meetings will be primarily supported by staff from the Environmental Sustainability Department, instead of Parks & Recreation.

More information about commission meetings, including agendas and participation details, will be shared on the city’s website as the first meeting approaches.
