Holiday shopping safety tips

Holiday shopping safety tips — in stores, online and at home
Post Date:11/18/2025

As the holiday season approaches, the Carlsbad Police Department is reminding the community to stay alert and take precautions to help keep the season safe and enjoyable for everyone.

With more people visiting local shopping centers, increased online shopping and a rise in home deliveries, the department is stepping up patrols and sharing simple steps residents can take to avoid becoming a victim of theft or fraud.

In-store shopping and parking lot safety
Throughout the holiday season, the Carlsbad Police Department will increase patrols in the city’s main shopping areas to prevent crimes such as theft from vehicles, shoplifting and fraudulent activities.

If you’re headed out to shop:

  • Pack your patience — shopping areas will be crowded

  • Park in well-lit areas and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight

  • Always lock your car and take your keys

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings

  • Shop with a friend or family member when possible

  • Keep your purse or wallet secure and avoid carrying large amounts of cash

If you’re on the road:

  • Drive slowly and follow directions in parking lots

  • Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists

  • Stop completely at stop signs and signals

  • Avoid distractions and stay alert

Online shopping safety
Online shopping offers convenience, but it can also open the door to scams and cyber theft. Online scammers may create fake websites, intercept transactions or trick shoppers into revealing personal or financial information.

To shop safely online:

  • Use trusted, secure websites (“https://” and a padlock symbol in the address bar)

  • Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true

  • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails or pop-up ads

  • Use a credit card rather than a debit card for added protection

  • Regularly review bank and credit card statements for unauthorized charges

  • Read reviews and return policies before making a purchase

Prevent holiday package theft
As online shopping increases, so do deliveries — and unfortunately, package theft. The Carlsbad Police Department will conduct neighborhood patrols to help deter thefts and encourages residents to take simple steps to protect their deliveries.

To prevent package theft:

  • Schedule deliveries when you or someone you trust will be home

  • Track packages and sign up for delivery notifications

  • Bring packages inside as soon as they arrive

  • Request a signature for delivery when possible

  • Use secure delivery lockers or lockboxes

  • Have packages sent to your workplace or a trusted neighbor

  • Install security cameras or doorbell cameras as a deterrent

  • Report any suspicious activity 24/7 by calling 442-339-2197

Let’s work together to keep the holiday season jolly, safe and secure.
