Stay safe this holiday season

Post Date:12/03/2025

As families prepare for the holidays, the Carlsbad Fire Department is reminding residents to keep safety top of mind. December is one of the busiest months for home fires, often caused by electrical issues, candles and heating equipment. A few simple precautions can help prevent emergencies and keep celebrations safe.

Decorate Safely
Whether you are hanging lights or decorating indoors, take steps to reduce fall and fire hazards.

Ladder Safety

  • Use ladders on a firm, level surface.
  • Maintain three points of contact, such as two feet and one hand.
  • Never overreach while on a ladder.
  • Wear slip-resistant shoes.
  • Keep metal ladders away from power lines or electrical equipment.
  • For extension ladders, ensure the ladder extends at least 3 feet above the landing point.

Electrical Safety
Overloaded circuits are a leading cause of holiday fires. To reduce risk:

  • Avoid overloading outlets or power strips.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for connecting light strands, which typically advise no more than three.
  • Do not plug appliances into extension cords or multi-outlet adapters.
  • Plug major appliances directly into wall outlets.
  • Only plug one heat-producing appliance into an outlet at a time.
  • If you rely heavily on extension cords, have a licensed electrician install additional outlets.

Candle Safety
December is the peak month for candle-related fires. Keep your home safe by:

  • Never leaving burning candles unattended.
  • Keeping candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn.
  • Placing candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Using sturdy holders and spacing candles at least 3 inches apart.
  • Extinguishing candles before bed or when leaving home.
  • Considering battery-operated candles as a safer option.

Holiday Tree Safety
Holiday tree fires can grow rapidly and cause severe damage. Reduce risk by selecting, placing and maintaining your tree safely.

For live trees:

  • Choose a fresh, green tree with flexible needles.
  • Cut 1 to 2 inches off the trunk and keep the stand filled with water.
  • Check water levels daily, as dry trees ignite quickly.

For both live and artificial trees:

  • Keep the tree at least 3 feet from heat sources.
  • Ensure it does not block an exit.
  • Use lights that have been tested by a recognized lab.
  • Confirm whether lights are rated for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace light strands with worn cords or loose bulb connections.
  • Turn off all holiday lights before going to bed or leaving the home.
  • Keep children away from electrical decorations.

After the Holidays

  • Dispose of live trees once they begin dropping needles.
  • Do not store dried trees inside the home, garage or against the house.
  • Stay tuned for curbside tree recycling information.
