Holiday traffic safety tips

Post Date:12/17/2025 9:54 AM

The winter holidays mean busier streets in Carlsbad, with kids on winter break and more visitors in town to celebrate with family and friends. Whether you’re driving, walking or biking, here are some easy ways you can help keep our street safe for everyone:

  • Slow down and watch for more kids and families walking or biking.
  • Put your phone away and avoid other distractions while driving, like admiring lights and décor. It’s more fun to stop and get a closer look anyway.
  • When biking or walking at night, wear something bright or reflective. Remember, lights are required on the front and back of your bike when it’s dark outside. If you’re walking, consider using a flashlight or the light on your phone.
  • If you have new bike riders at home, review rules of the road together, including Carlsbad-specific rules for e-bikes.
  • Don’t forget a well-fitting helmet and bike lights. Helmets are required for anyone under 18.

Ringing in the New Year Safely
As we head into New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the Carlsbad Police Department will have extra patrols on the road with a focus on impaired driving enforcement. Our goal is simple: to keep everyone safe as people celebrate and travel.

Driving under the influence puts lives at risk. Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both, impaired driving can have serious and irreversible consequences.

As you make plans to celebrate, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • If you plan to drink, plan your ride. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or leave your car at home.
  • If you’re hosting a gathering, have a plan to help guests get home safely and make sure they’re on board before the night begins.
  • If you’re driving, stay alert. Watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vehicles, especially during late-night hours.

Reminder:

  • Carlsbad’s Social Host Ordinance holds adults accountable for hosting gatherings where underage drinking or drug use occurs.

If you see or hear suspicious activity, report it immediately by calling the non-emergency number at 442-339-2197. Always call 9-1-1 for emergencies or crimes in progress.
