Tips to beat the heat

With a heat advisory in effect this week, safety officials are reminding residents to take extra precautions to stay cool, especially older adults, young children and others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Plan activities for cooler times of day
Try to be most physically active early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Take frequent breaks and pace yourself.

Drink plenty of fluids
Drink more water than usual, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Staying hydrated helps your body regulate temperature.

Watch for signs of heat illness
If you feel dizzy, nauseous, unusually tired or otherwise unwell, contact your physician or seek medical care.

Never leave children or pets in vehicles
Temperatures inside a parked car can quickly reach dangerous levels — even if the windows are cracked and the outside temperature doesn’t feel extreme.

Keep pets cool
Make sure pets have access to shade and plenty of fresh water throughout the day.

Those feeling the effects of the heat can also visit the air-conditioned Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane to cool off.
