It’s Wildfire Preparedness Week, a reminder that wildfire risk in California is year-round and conditions are already getting drier.
The city got some recent reminders of this with brushfires that broke out in Oceanside and San Marcos that people could see from Carlsbad.
You can find a wide range of Emergency Preparedness tips on our website, and here are some simple steps now to help protect your home and family:
- Clear the first 5 feet around your home
- Build an emergency kit
- Sign up for emergency alerts (More on that below)
- Create an evacuation plan
- Strengthen your home against wildfire
The city also encourages community members to attend the Community Connection: Wildfire Preparedness event on May 16, designed to help residents protect their homes and prepare for wildfire season.

Staying informed about emergencies
A big part of emergency preparedness is staying informed. So please make sure you’re signed up for Genasys Protect and AlertSanDiego. The city and county use both systems to inform the community during an emergency.
Genasys Protect is the new technology first responders use to plan, manage and communicate evacuations.
The Genasys Protect app also allows you to monitor zones outside Carlsbad, such as where family members live or where you work.
AlertSanDiego is used alongside Genasys Protect to alert community members during emergencies. Residents should register online to ensure they receive critical alerts through landlines, cellphones, email and text.
