With the Fourth of July approaching, Carlsbad is gearing up for a busy holiday weekend. The Carlsbad Police and Fire Departments are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Here are some essential tips to help everyone have a safe and enjoyable holiday. 

Safety tips for celebrations 

• Fireworks: All fireworks are illegal in Carlsbad and throughout San Diego County. The city recently strengthened enforcement through a new ordinance that holds property owners, renters and event hosts accountable for illegal fireworks used on or near their property, even if set off by guests. Violations can result in fines starting at $1,000 and reaching up to $10,000 per day. Illegal fireworks increase the risk of fires and injuries and can impact neighbors, pets and first responders. Attending a professionally organized fireworks display is the safest way to celebrate. 

• Responsible drinking: Designate a driver or use rideshare services if you plan to drink. Providing alcohol to minors is prohibited under the city's Social Host Ordinance. Report drunk drivers by calling 911. 

• E-bike safety: More people may be using e-bikes to get around or enjoy the outdoors during the holiday weekend. Carlsbad’s new e-bike laws are now in effect, and violations can result in citations. Riders must be at least 12 years old, and e-bikes are prohibited at Poinsettia and Pine Avenue community parks. The Police Department can also impound e-bikes and e-motorcycles when there is an immediate or substantial public safety risk. Community members can report unsafe e-bike riding through the city’s online reporting portal, but emergencies should always be reported by calling 911. Please ride responsibly, stay alert and follow all traffic laws. 

• Pet safety: Keep your pets secure, especially if you won't be home. If a pet gets lost or you find a lost pet, the San Diego Humane Society can assist in reuniting pets with their owners. 

Beach safety guidance 

• Crowds: Expect large crowds, especially at our beaches. Bring your sunscreen and patience. If you're visiting with children, dress them in bright-colored clothing and take a photo of them before heading out. With larger crowds, these simple steps can help lifeguards quickly locate children if they become separated from their group. 

• Rules and regulations: Alcohol and pets are not permitted on city beaches. Fires are allowed only in designated fire pits. 

• Personal security: Secure your vehicle and personal belongings. Do not leave valuables in your car.  

• Water conditions: Check for signage when you arrive, including signs showing rip current locations. Swim near a lifeguard tower. Check our beach safety page for more information. 

• Litter: Help keep our beaches clean by picking up after yourself.
