Trails to beat the heat

July is National Park and Recreation Month, making it the perfect time to explore Carlsbad’s 67 miles of trails. Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll, a family-friendly hike, a shaded nature walk or scenic coastal views, Carlsbad offers plenty of opportunities to get outside, stay active and connect with nature this summer.

Here are a few trails to add to your summer adventure list:

Coastal Rail Trail

This paved trail is a favorite for families thanks to its easy terrain and convenient access points. Stretching between Oak Avenue and Tamarack Avenue, the Coastal Rail Trail offers a smooth path for walking, biking and scootering while connecting to shops, parks and coastal areas along the way.

Parking and trail access: Street parking is available near trailheads along Tamarack Avenue, Chestnut Avenue and Oak Avenue.

Batiquitos Lagoon North Bluff Trail

Nature lovers of all ages can enjoy scenic lagoon views and opportunities to spot birds, rabbits and native plants along this peaceful coastal trail. The relatively gentle terrain makes it a great option for families and casual walkers looking to explore one of Carlsbad’s most unique natural areas.

Parking and trail access: Windrose Circle trailhead and the Nature Center at 7380 Gabbiano Lane. Additional trail access points are available along Batiquitos Drive.

Located near The Forum Carlsbad and adjacent to preserved open space, La Costa Glen Trail offers a shorter, easy-to-follow route that works well for younger hikers and anyone looking for a relaxed outing. This trail is just over a mile and isn’t very strenuous. The trail’s wide surface and nearby amenities make it an approachable option for people new to hiking.

Parking and trail access: Calle Barcelona near The Forum Carlsbad. Parking is available in the rear lot near Jimbo’s, 1923 Calle Barcelona.

Hosp Grove is one of Carlsbad’s largest trail networks and a favorite spot to slow down and enjoy nature. The trail winds through a grove of towering eucalyptus trees originally planted for the railroad industry more than a century ago. Today, the area offers shaded paths, peaceful picnic spots and views of Buena Vista Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean.

The unpaved trail has a few moderate hills, offering a bit of a workout. It reaches more than 100 feet in elevation.

Parking and trail access: Trailheads at Jefferson Street or Monroe Street

If you enjoy spending time on local trails, consider giving back by joining a volunteer trail workday. Volunteer opportunities are offered throughout the year and are a great way to meet fellow outdoor enthusiasts while making a lasting impact on the community.
