Recycling unused or leftover paint helps protect the environment and reduces waste. Through the PaintCare program, Carlsbad residents have convenient ways to recycle and safely dispose of paint. Learn about accepted paint types, drop-off locations and tips to reduce paint waste.

New option to recycle paint in Carlsbad
Residents can now recycle paint at the Palomar Transfer Station through the PaintCare program. This program was created to make paint recycling easy and operates in 10 states, including California, which has special paint recycling requirements.

How to prepare paint for recycling

Do not mix paint types. Keep each type in its original container.
Secure the lid. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed and the manufacturer’s label is intact.
Prevent spills. Secure containers in your vehicle during transport.

How can I reduce paint waste?

Plan your project carefully to buy only the amount you need. Use online calculators or consult with paint experts.
Store leftover paint properly by sealing the lid tightly and keeping it in a cool, dry place.
Use up leftover paint on touch-up projects, as a primer, or donate it to local schools, community theaters or charities.

How long does paint last?
Most paint lasts 2-10 years if stored correctly. Latex and acrylic paints usually last longer than oil-based paints.

How can I extend the life of my leftover paint?
To extend the life of leftover paint, store it properly by sealing the lid tightly and keeping it in a cool, dry place. Consider transferring small amounts of paint into smaller containers to minimize exposure to air, which can cause it to dry out.

If possible, avoid storing paint in the garage where it can be subject to more severe temperature fluctuations. Store paint in a dry place where temperatures vary between 60°F and 80°F.

How can I tell if paint has gone bad?
Paint that smells sour or rancid, forms a thick rubbery layer or has lumps that won’t blend smoothly is likely unusable.

Tip: If your paint has liquid on top and solids on the bottom, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unusable. Paint naturally separates over time. Instead of mixing it manually, take it to the store where you bought it, and they can remix it using a shaker machine.

What happens if I use old paint?
Old paint may not provide proper coverage or adhesion and can release more hazardous fumes when applied. Using expired paint could also lead to poor results, such as peeling or uneven finishes.

Can I make old paint usable again?
Add a little water to latex, acrylic or chalk paint and mix thoroughly. For oil-based paint, soften it by setting the can in hot water and adding paint thinner.

Why recycle paint?

Every year, about 850 million gallons of paint are sold in the U.S., and around 10% goes unused. Recycling paint:

Prevents pollution. Proper recycling keeps harmful substances out of our soil, groundwater and air.
Conserves resources. Recycling one gallon of paint prevents 115 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
Reduces landfill waste. It ensures paint is safely processed instead of contributing to landfill waste.
Supports reuse. Usable paint can be donated, providing resources for schools, theaters or community organizations.
