The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is a proud provider of American Red Cross training. Get a head start on a career in aquatics by training to become an authorized water safety instructor or lifeguard.

Courses include:

  • Lifeguard Academy (train to be a lifeguard)
  • Water Safety Instructor (train to be a swim instructor)

The Lifeguard Academy is a three- to five-day program that provides the training, skills and American Red Cross certifications typically required for employment as a lifeguard at most public aquatic facilities. Register online for the following session:

Special summer 2026 session (18+ only)
July 31, Aug. 1, 2, 8 and 9

  • Friday, July 31: Swim competency test, 4 to 5 p.m.
  • Saturdays and Sundays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This special summer session is open only to participants who will be at least 18 years old by the last day of class.

All sessions will be held at Alga Norte Aquatic Center.

Train and get hired! The City of Carlsbad is looking to hire potential candidates who are available Monday through Friday between the hours of 5 a.m. and 3 p.m.
