The Carlsbad Police Department is excited to offer residents an inside look at how we serve and protect our community through our seven-week Citizens Police Academy. This program is designed to strengthen police-community partnerships and provide an in-depth understanding of our operations and initiatives.

  • Crime analysis, directed patrol, and crime trends
  • Dispatch communications and calling the police
  • Patrol operations and strategies
  • Crisis management, de-escalation, and use of force

  • Crime suppression strategies
  • Investigating crime (patrol, family services, and crimes of violence)
  • Current drug trends
  • Traffic and roadway safety

Academy details

  • Duration: Seven weeks, with one (1) three-hour evening class each week.
  • Schedule: Classes are held Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m.
  • Eligibility: Participants must be Carlsbad residents and at least 18 years of age.
  • Class Size: Limited to 25 participants.
  • Frequency: One academy is held each year.
