Banners Recognize Graduates

This week nearly 2,000 Carlsbad high school students would normally be donning their caps and gowns to celebrate an important rite of passage. But, during the COVID-19 emergency, high school graduations are among a long list of things that are no longer “normal.”

That’s why the City of Carlsbad teamed up with local parents and school districts to recognize high school graduates with banners proximately displayed at two of the city’s busiest downtown intersections.

After being approached by a group of local parents, the Carlsbad City Council approved the use of city light poles to display banners from high schools located in Carlsbad. The banners were privately funded by parent groups and installed by city staff.

Celebration banners are on display at the following locations:

Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard

  • Army & Navy Academy
  • Carlsbad Village Academy
  • Carlsbad Seaside Academy
  • La Costa Canyon High School
  • Pacific Ridge High School

Carlsbad Village Drive and State Street

  • Carlsbad High School
  • Sage Creek High School

“During this very unusual time, the city is proud to help celebrate the Class of 2020 high school graduates and partner with the community and local schools,” said City of Carlsbad Assistant Director of Community Development Mike Peterson.
