Take a (virtual) Field Trip to the Ranch

While our communities shelter in place, we are offering our California History & Art Program virtually for teachers, students, and anyone who wants to learn! The program is designed for 4th grade students learning about California history and the rancho time period.

Teachers can use all the resources below as well as the Education Guide and two art lessons from the creative team in Library & Cultural ArtsSaddle Up to Foil Embossing and Patterned Peacock Feather.

Introduction to Carrillo Ranch – Learn about actor Leo Carrillo and the Ranch of the Spanish Daggers in this 12 minute film.

Virtual Tour – Take a tour of some of the Ranch’s most beautiful structures and gardens with this virtual tour. Print the attached Scavenger Hunt and see if you can spot some Ranch treasures!

How Windmills Pump Water – Leo Carrillo Ranch has 2 windmills. In their day, they pumped water for the families that lived here, provided water for livestock, and even filled Leo’s swimming pool! Learn more about these western icons.

The Cisco Kid – Watch an episode of the TV show that Leo Carrillo is most famous for. This show was made for kids, but beloved by many for the good guy bandits who solved crimes and fought for right each week.

Leo sells Quaker Masa Harina – Leo Carrillo was a star and his endorsement of products helped them to sell. Watch Leo sell a product we use here at the Ranch during the 4th Grade Field Trip, pre-made corn meal (masa harina) for tortillas, tamales, enchiladas and more. Still sold in stores, you can try masa harina at home if it looks good to you! Note that Leo recorded this commercial in both English and Spanish.
